Are you interested in hot stamping and want to know if it’s the ideal printing solution for you?

Read the answers to the Frequently Asked Questions we receive about this processing technique.

WHAT IS HOT STAMPING?

Hot stamping is a printing method which consists in transferring a metal foil on the surface of the object thanks to a cliché and the action of heat. The stamp thus obtained can be golden, silver and other colours available to the customer.

This technique allows to obtain special decorations (logos, stripes or Greek fret) with the typical brightness of metallic prints. Hot stamping differs from metallisation because the latter is used when you want to coat an item entirely.

INDECO Serigrafia always suggests to submit the decoration to the internal graphics department to adapt it to the characteristics of hot stamping.

WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS OF HOT STAMPING?

The main strength of hot stamping is the high quality of the production and the strong grip of the decorations on any surface. Regardless of the colours chosen, decorations transferred by hot stamping are brilliant and able to enhance any kind of packaging.

Another advantage of hot stamping is that it adapts to plastic, glass, metal and wood. The transfer of a metal foil can also be done on a coated object without creating any problem to the coating.

Hot stamping can be combined with other printing techniques such as screen printing and pad printing. This possibility represents an added value in printing packaging with a particular design, such as that of the perfume or cosmetics industry.

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF HOT STAMPING?

The only limitation of hot stamping is that with this method you cannot print very small letters. This is due to the characteristics of the printing method and the inevitable loss of definition during transfer of the metal from the cliché to the item. To overcome this limitation, we resort to screen printing or pad printing techniques that can print small letters with high definitionClick here to visit all our interesting casestudies.

WHICH ARE THE INDUSTRIES IN WHICH IS HOT STAMPING IS USED?

Hot stamping is applicable in perfumery and in the cosmetics and beverage industries. In other words, in all those sectors where the packaging requires refined decorations that convey an idea of elegance.

WHAT ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT WORKPIECES TO USE THE HOT STAMPING TECHNIQUE ON?

The most difficult items are usually those with complex, irregular shapes. However, INDECO Serigrafia uses flexible printing systems that allow to carry out hot stamping also on uneven surfaces.

WHEN AND WHY DO WE ADVISE CUSTOMERS ASKING FOR HOT STAMPING TO USE OTHER PRINTING TECHNIQUES?

Instead of hot stamping, we recommend screen printing and pad printing when the customer wants to reduce production cost.
